Dear Professor Schoenberg:
In receipt of your letter dated November 25 in answer to my letter
dated October 31, I realize that I could not have explained myself clearly
enough in my letter dated October 31, otherwise you would not have misunder-
stood my offer. In order to make it completely clear, I would like to repeat
the situation:
A. Professor Schoenberg is furnishing the manuscript of the new version
of Opus 16 to C. F. Peters Corporation and will read proof, both without cost
to C. F. Peters Corporation.
B. C. F. Peters Corporation will be responsible for making performance
material available of the new version of Opus 16 which will be copyrighted by
C. F. Peters Corporation.
C. All royalties collected for the rental and performance fees of the new
version
of Opus 16 will be divided on a 50–50 basis between Arnold Schoenberg
and C. F. Peters Corporation with the understanding that the first $ 500 wich
is being collected by C. F. Peters Corporation for rental fees will be turned
over to Arnold Schoenberg
, and as soon as Arnold Schoenberg receives this amount
of $ 500, C. F. Peters Corporation will receive all rental fees equal to the
amount of the production cost of the performance material. Without seeing the
new version and without knowing how many corrections will be made when proof is
read, C. F. Peters Corporation cannot estimate the production cost at the present
time, but it is understood thet C. F. Peters Corporation is not entitled to a
higher amount than $ 1,000 as reimbursement for the production cost; should the
production cost be less than $ 1,000, then naturally C. F. Peters corporation will
be entitled only the reimbursement of less than $ 1,000. I repeat, after Arnold
Schoenberg
receives from the collected rental fees his honorarium of $ 500
, and
C. F. Peters Corporation receives from the collected rental fees its reimbursement
of the production cost, but not more than $ 1,000, all the rental fees collected
will be divided between Arnold Schoenberg and C. F. Peters Corporartion on a 50–
50 basis. Performance fees are automatically collected and divided by ASCAP on
a 50–50 basis.
D. Mr. Hoffmann received the Peters share of $ 50 and no allegationspayments whatso-
ever are to be made any more to Mr. Hoffmann by C. F. Peters Corporation.

I tried to explain myself very clearly, so that no further misunderstandings
can ariese, and I believe that you will agree with me that this proposition is
completely fair from your viewpoint, because you realize that I have to pay for
the production cost immediately, but I will be reimbursed by same only after
your honorarium is taken care of by collected rental fees.
You will understand that it is impossible for me to have the material en-
graved or autographed by somebody who is completely unknown to me. If a work is
published by me, then it has to be exactly the same way as other Peters Edition
publications, and I assure you today that the Schoenschreiber will do a perfect
job and not only you but also I, as a publisher, will be proud of it.
I hope I made myself clear and as soon as your are able to furnish me with
the completed manuscript of the new version of Opus 16, I will go ahead immedi-
ately with the preparation of same.
With great devotion and with kindest personal regards,
Most sincerely yours, Walter Hinrichsen
